Meet Toby Damisch, Douglas County Assessor

Toby Damisch was elected Douglas County Assessor in November 2022 and began his first term in January 2023, after more than 25 years working in the Douglas County Assessor's Office.

25+ years in the Douglas County Assessor's Office

In his years of service to Douglas County, Toby was promoted by four different Assessors and worked in every part of the office: real estate appraisal, title, GIS, data analysis, statistics, reporting, management, technology and customer service. He served eight years as Chief Deputy Assessor before voters elected him Assessor.

During his tenure the office built a reputation for using technology to serve residents better, manage the cost of government, expand online services and improve the accuracy and fairness of property valuations.

Iowa roots and education

Toby was born and raised in Eastern Iowa, the second of four sons. He attended parochial school and graduated from Regis Jesuit High School in Cedar Rapids. At Iowa State University in Ames he earned a B.S. in Community and Regional Planning with a minor in Economics, working his way through college in local restaurants and moving into management.

His first job in both public service and real estate came during college summers, performing property appraisal work for the City of Ames. He later pursued graduate studies at Regis University.

Family

Toby and his wife, Marcie, have been married for 23 years and have a college-aged son, Will. The family enjoys traveling, dogs, the outdoors, skiing and other mountain activities, cooking and music.
